Why Boarding?
"Children thrive because of the warm and caring relationships that they have with staff."
"Staff support children to become rounded individuals academically and socially."
"Staff know each child extremely well. Parents are pleased with the level of care that their children receive and how much progress their children make."
"There is a culture of improvement. Leaders are not complacent, and always want to do more."
We have up to 80 weekly boarders aged 11-18 in our two boarding houses. Our boarders consistently rate their experience here as ‘outstanding’ and we are delighted by the profound sense of family the boys share. We aim to make South House and East Wing a genuine 'home away from home' and feel proud of our success in this ambition.
Boys benefit greatly from boarding at Reading School, not just because of the outstanding academic success they achieve, but also because of the extra time they have for recreational activities than if they travelled to school each day: every evening on the school site you will dozens of boarders enjoying supervised clubs and activities or playing sport and games together in their free time.
We believe that Boarding at Reading School should mirror the best of family life and in the interaction between boarders, staff and parents we ensure that this family is a reality and not just a concept. The boarding family at Reading School is at the heart of the School and boarders are consistently the best young leaders and team players in the school. They are amongst those who participate the most in sports, music and enrichment activities, and achieve the most outstanding academic results.
Considering the exceptional experience enjoyed by boarders at Reading School, we also believe that Boarding at Reading School represents outstanding value for money. As a state boarding school, our fees are approximately one third of those that might be charged in a comparable private school.
