Welcome 'We are Redingensians' 2020

The new academic year is always an exciting one, as we welcome a wonderful cohort of new Redingensians.  This academic year we are particularly pleased to see students back to Reading School.

We extend a special welcome to all our new students and their parents as they become a part of the ‘Reading School Family’.  Equally, we are delighted to welcome our new staff to the school. Each have been appointed for their specialist knowledge across a range of subjects and we look forward to their commitment to developing a culture that is rooted in core values and shaped by behaviours that are characterised by respect.

The challenges presented by COVID-19 are real and extensive. But we believe that the way to overcome these substantial challenges is by being grounded in our core values and focusing on trademark positive behaviours that develop a culture of commitment. We need courage and adaptability to ensure that we can provide an exceptional curriculum. Learning from international best practice we are enhancing our provision through our AA approach that will enable all year groups to grow in ways that respond to need, because of the impact of coronavirus since March 2020. It is wholly in keeping with our intellectual conviction that:

“The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true education”. (Martin Luther King Jr)

We are determined therefore that in 2020-2021, Reading School continues to grow as a community that helps young men to learn how to use their potential for the benefit of others.

We need to work together to enable students and staff to develop, by working through challenges, so that sustained high performance is accompanied by personal development, and the academic is married to well-being. We continue to aspire for high performance with consistency and collaboration.

The students have responded well in the first week of term. I have been especially impressed by the positive approach of our new Year 7 cohort, along with the diligence shown by Year 12 regarding their Collections.  In addition, the behaviour of students in the staggered breaks has been very positive.

A short clip of our first week back:

The new academic year is always an exciting one, as we welcome a wonderful cohort of new Redingensians. This academic year we are particularly pleased to see students back to school after being isolated from peers for six months. We were delighted to share some of the highlights of this week welcoming new Year 7 and new Year 12 students. This year, Reading School has created an extensive bespoke transition programme for new Year 7’s to assist with the settling in process. This has been led by Mr D McGall (Assistant Head), Mr T Evans (Assistant Head), Heads of House, as well as Ms S Drummond and Mrs L Kesteven with support from our external providers Path Hill. This has included many collaboration and team building exercises as well as setting expectations to independent learning.

We look forward to the new term with great enthusiasm!
