GCSE Results 2023
Reading School’s Year 11 students received a fine set of results today, with 43.1% of all grades being awarded the highest ‘9’ grade; this is the culmination of 5 years of hard work and dedication in spite of the challenges that they were dealt.
These students had only had one full year of ‘normal’ secondary school before the first lock-down. In addition, the start of their GCSEs in Year 9 was once again disrupted by subsequent lock-downs, forcing them to start their journey towards today at home in front of a computer screen.
We are proud of the way in which students continued to excel simultaneously in a wide variety of subjects, as demonstrated by the fact that 92% of students studied for 10 or more different qualifications, and indeed 26 students sat 12 different qualifications. Of these subjects it is particularly pleasing to see students succeeding in Electronics; the first time it has been examined at Reading School since it was reintroduced 3 years ago, with 68% of students achieving a grade 9 or 8.
Students’ ability to balance their academic progress with their personal development and extra-curricular endeavours is a cornerstone of the holistic Reading Way curriculum, and it is for this reason that we celebrate in particular those 5 students (Arnav A, Taz B, Finlay G, Milan G, Bharat J) who managed to demonstrate academic excellence by achieving all grade 9s in 12 different qualifications, alongside their rich diet of Floreat (character development programme), educational visits and PSHE sessions.
The richness and ambition of the Reading School curriculum seeks to stretch and challenge students academically, and it is therefore extremely pleasing to see 21 students excel in an ‘AS Level’ qualification in Religious Studies, achieving an A grade. Furthermore, three students were recognised by the National Examination boards for achieving amongst the top scores nationally (Daniel S in Ancient History, Oliver M in Chemistry and Nathan W in Economics). There were a pleasing number of top grades achieved in Geography and Ancient History in particular. Whilst over 85% of English Literature students gained grades 9-7. In addition, students flourished in all three sciences whilst Mathematics continues to excel with a tremendous 83.9% of students achieving the top grades 9-8.
The Boarding community continues to flourish under the leadership of Sr Sanchez and Mr Lloyd, enabling the boarders to achieve highly, with Rohan O, Alex P, Peter P, Raymond W and Srisht C leading the charge with at least 6 grade 9s each alongside their invaluable contributions to the boarding community. The mentoring from older students, inspirational teaching from staff and interventions from the pastoral team have borne fruit. The results are testament also to the students’ determination to succeed, with some students benefitting from additional small group support during study leave.
Having recently been designated as a School of Sanctuary, we were delighted that Andrii S, an exchange student from Ukraine, passed his English GCSE, as well as achieving very high grades in Maths and Combined Science.
Mr A M Robson (Headmaster) stated:
‘The character and resilience of our students has helped them to deal with the challenges they have faced, resulting in excellent GCSE results. We have provided opportunities for them to flourish and they have responded through nurturing a commitment culture. A culture characterised by a drive for high performance within and beyond the classroom. Non-negotiable trademark behaviours including respect, hard work and teamwork have helped to secure positive outcomes.
The purposeful high-performance culture has been enabled by a collaborative approach where students, staff and parents have worked together in partnership. Furthermore, the strategic leadership of the Governing Body, led by Mr Robert Kenwrick along with the support of the Reading Foundation has ensured that academic excellence, belonging and community have been priorities throughout the academic year.
We wish all our students the very best in the onward future journey’
We take immense pride in the remarkable accomplishments of our students and acknowledge that certain parents and communities may have a desire to make charitable contributions as part of their celebratory moments. Reading School holds charitable status, and we wholeheartedly embrace any gestures of appreciation that can directly contribute to our ‘Building for the Future’ initiative.
