Reading School moves to online learning for all students

Following this evening’s statement, by the Prime Minister and the enforcing of new measures as part of the UK government’s coronavirus response, we would like to provide reassurance and clarity as much as possible, at this time.

The wellbeing of all our staff, students and their families is of paramount importance.

It is crucial that our staff, our students, and their families stay well, thereby enabling our students to continue to flourish academically and in terms of personal development.

In the face of challenges, our attitudes and behaviours must remain positive. In an extension to the previously communicated plan for this first week back, Reading School will now sustain remote education until February half term, continuing the high-quality education that our outstanding staff have been delivering online, face-to-face and in hybrid form since March 2020. The curriculum will remain broadly the same, with regular assessment in various forms and live interaction as appropriate. Your support is essential in ensuring that our students attend following their usual timetable and complete work to a high standard. Vulnerable students and the children of critical workers will be supported on-site as planned.

Regarding Summer exams, you will have heard that the Secretary of State for Education will work with Ofqual on ‘alternative arrangements....as (school closure) will mean that it’s not possible or fair for all exams to go ahead this summer as normal.’ We do not yet have any further information than the public statement, but as we successfully did in Summer 2020, will ensure that students are best placed to be rewarded for their hard work.

I am proud of the character our students, parents and staff have shown during this pandemic, and the importance of mental health must remain forefront in our words and actions. By engaging positively as a community, both in the day and boarding school, we can build a sustainable model for these uncertain times.

I will communicate regularly with parents and students, both day and boarding, using emails, the school website and Twitter, where valuable support and advice can be found.
