Reading School's GCSE Results 2020

Our students are encouraged to be intellectually curious and creative and to approach new opportunities and challenges with confidence and resilience.  These results reflect the quality of hard work undertaken by pupils over the last three years, led by teachers who have worked extremely hard to compile persuasive evidence in recent months.

Over 50% of entries were awarded the highly coveted grade 9 and 79.7% were awarded grades 9-8. 93.7% of entries were awarded grades 9-7 and 100% of pupils gained five grades 9-5 including English and Maths.  In addition, over 99.2% of candidates achieved the English Baccalaureate.

Regarding specific subjects, 87 pupils achieved grade 9 in Chemistry and 97.5% of biologists and 98% of Physics students gained grades 9-7. Furthermore, 97% of History candidates gained grades 9-7 and 96% of geographers gained grades 9-7. In Mathematics, 110 out of 121 candidates gained grades 9-8. Students of Latin were not to be outdone, recording 96% grades 9-8.

Through our lead, learn and serve programme we seek to embed a strong sense of social responsibility and belonging to and serving our community.   In a typical year, many hours of volunteering time is given by students and staff through strong established links with primary schools through our Future Stories programme, as well as other community action projects.

We are hugely proud of our pupils that have led initiatives during lock down especially those raising much needed donations for Future Stories Support Fund, the NHS and Sure 24. 

The following boys have demonstrated not only academic excellence achieving fine grades, as well as the spirit of community and service to others: Dominic S, Aryan G, Liam P, Sam H, Malik D, Jacob H, Archie T, Matthew G, Sam P, Daniel V and Benjamin M all raised £805 to fund a new irrigation system for the new farm at Rain Edge High School in Nakuru, Kenya. 

Unfortunately, it is not possible to mention all the students individually who have fulfilled their potential, but needless to say we are extremely of proud of them all.

Harish R (Y11) said:

“Reading School equipped me with all the tools I needed in order to succeed in my school life - whether that be Excellence, Integrity, Leadership or Community. The staff ensure that you're in a supportive environment where you can focus on your interests and truly excel at them, while the facilities means that your ability is not restricted by your income. Thank you to my teachers and to Reading School for their help and guidance for the last five years.”

Dylan D (Y11) stated:

“I’m very happy with the grades I achieved today especially those in Geography, Chemistry, Maths and French. My grades mean I have been able to secure a place at Reading School Sixth Form which I am very pleased about as I feel as though it is the ideal place for me to continue my studies. I hope to study Maths, Geography and French next year as I have found a new passion for studying everything that goes on in the world.”

Mr A M Robson (Headmaster) commented:

“Undoubtedly, we look forward to seeing the students in September, alongside the strong cohort of new students we are welcoming to Reading School at the beginning of the 2020-2021 Academic year. These results clearly give our students a firm foundation on which to build further success in the Sixth Form. It is important to acknowledge the character and resilience they have demonstrated throughout their time at our school, especially during 2020. Thus we celebrate not only their fine examination results but also their commitment to Sport, STEM, public speaking, volunteering and developing a community ethos.  There is substantial evidence that the cohort value academic standards, but also care for people and the community. Our Year 11 students have ably demonstrated their capacity to learn and serve and as a consequence have flourished.

I would like to thank the students for their dedication, commitment and resolve.  Our students have demonstrated a resilience allied to compassion in challenging circumstances since March. In addition, the important role of parents and governors alongside the professionalism of staff must be acknowledged. Working in partnership with staff, day students and boarders, have played a key part in strengthening the Reading School family this year.”

Mr A Lloyd (Head of Sixth Form) said:

“I look forward to welcoming all our students who will be enrolling to our Sixth Form both current students and those who will be joining us from other schools. To those students who will be moving on, I sincerely hope that this is not goodbye; you will forever be a part of the Reading School family.”
